Faith

Faith

It is important to read God’s Word; however, it’s equally important that we believe what God’s Word says. The belief in God’s Word is called faith. The Bible defines faith as follows: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for, being convinced of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1 (NET) Simply put, faith is believing what we cannot see.

Belief without Seeing

The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1. Obviously, no human being was alive when heaven and the earth were made; therefore we have no visual proof that the earth was created by God. As a matter of fact, even those who have seen God still can’t provide us with concrete proof that He exists. We would essentially have to take them at their word. This is where your faith comes into play.

Ladies and Gentlemen, faith is believing in something that you are not able to see. I cannot see God; however, I fully believe that He exists. Notice how the Bible conveys this idea: “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Hebrews 11:6. Simply put, faith is what you need in order to believe that God IS, and that He alone will save you.

The Action of Faith

Faith is not some arbitrary thought that resides in my mind. Faith often comes in the form of a test, and that test requires action. If I have faith that God is calling me to get a new job, I must exercise that faith by applying for that job and interviewing with the recruiter. Faith requires action and we see this action from some of the most important people in the Bible.

  • The Faith of Abraham

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” Hebrews 11:8

Notice that Abraham’s faith called for action. He followed God without knowing his destination.

  • The Faith of Moses

By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.” Hebrews 11:24-25

Moses had to refuse the comfort of being royalty for the discomfort of following God’s Word.

  • The Faith of Rahab

By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.” Hebrews 11:31

Rahab decided to help the spies not knowing for certain that she would be saved. She exercised faith.

Faith in God’s Word

Even though we must take God’s Word in faith, we also must remember that God has given us indications that He does exist and that His Word is true. This is why we can see how complex the human body is, and we look at nature and understand that Someone had to create all that exists. It is why we have the prophecies in Scripture that correlate with history. It tells us that God’s Word can be trusted and our faith is confirmed. Having absolute trust in God and His Word may not come immediately. We all must have an experience with God and that experience comes by spending time with God in prayer, reading His Word, and abiding in His will. If you aren’t doing these things, the best time to start is right now!

Homework: Pray for more faith in God. In the meantime, find something in your life that requires you to have more faith then what you currently have now and allow God to work in your favor.
