Yes, You Can Trust the Bible!
One question that may arise is— How can we be sure that the Scriptures are trustworthy? What indications are given that help us know that its contents are from our Creator? In this study, we will look at the number of ways God has confirmed that we can depend on His Word.
History
Genesis 6:17 says, “And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and everything that is in the earth shall die.” God’s Word reveals to us that in ancient times, the earth was destroyed by a flood. While this historical event has been debated and scrutinized, we also must recognize that scientists have discovered fossils of sea creatures high above sea level in places like the Grand Canyon. We also recognize that various cultures and religions have a similar flood story which gives credence to the Bible’s account.
Bible Prophecy
In Daniel 2, we read about a statue that foretold of the nations that would rule the world. Scriptures revealed that after Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome would rule the world.
Some believe Daniel 11 prophesied the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. “And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.” Daniel 11:40
In Revelation 11, John revealed the French Revolution: “And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.” Revelation 12:8-9
And both Daniel and John revealed that the Papacy would persecute Christians for 1260 years. “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” Daniel 7:25
“And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.” Revelation 12:6
Prediction of Jesus’ Birth
In Genesis 3:15, we read the following prophecy: “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” This prophecy foretold of a Savior that would come and save the world.
The writers of the Old Testament also revealed this coming Messiah: “When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.” Hosea 11:1 When Jesus was young, He and his family fled to Egypt. This prophecy foretold that God would call His Son out of Egypt.
“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 History confirms that a man named Jesus was crucified. However, the Bible reveals that He was the Son of God and died for our sins.
A Changed Life
The Bible says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” 2Corinthians 5:17
One of the biggest pieces of evidence of the Bible’s legitimacy is the fact that it has life-changing power. I know about this power from personal experience. When I was in high school, I found myself hanging out with the wrong crowd. My life was going nowhere fast. I ended up getting arrested and my car was impounded for possession of marijuana. I was a wreck. However, once I started studying God’s Word, my life began to change. The more I studied, the less I wanted to hang out with the wrong crowd. Eventually, I lost my taste for drugs, alcohol, and sinful activities. To what do I attribute this change? The Word of God!
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present the Bible to you. It is this Word that informs us what has occurred, what is occurring, and what will occur in the future. God’s Word will take a sinful individual and transform him so that he no longer seeks after his own pleasure, but rather God’s righteousness. What a powerful gift God has given us!
