The Divinity of Jesus Christ
In our previous study, we learned that God has a Son. We call His Son, Jesus Christ. He was with God from the beginning and is the Creator of heaven and earth. However, Jesus didn’t just create the world, He also died to save the world (John 3:16). Nevertheless, there are many questions surrounding the nature of Christ. What is He? Is He an angel? Is He a man? Is He God? In this lesson, we will learn the truth from the word of God.
Did Jesus come to earth as an angel?
God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? Hebrews 1:1-2, 4-5
According to the Bible, Jesus was greater than the angels. Angels are powerful beings, but even the angels worship Christ; therefore, Jesus could not be an angel in the sense of Him being part of the angelic host that was created by God.
Was Jesus a man?
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 1Timothy 2:5
Here we see that Jesus was called a man. It should be understood that Jesus was flesh and blood. However, we are about to discover that even though Jesus was a man, He was much more than that.
How does the Bible refer to Jesus’ humanity?
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 1 Timothy 3:16
The Scriptures declare that Jesus was God manifested in the flesh. In essence, He was a man, but He was also the manifestation of God.
How did Christ identify Himself in the New Testament?
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. John 8:58
How did God identify Himself in the Old Testament?
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. Exodus 3:14
Jesus referred to Himself as I AM, which correlates with God’s name for Himself.
How did Isaiah refer to Jesus?
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
According to the Bible, who is equal with God?
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. Philippians 2:5
Conclusion: Jesus came to earth as a man. He had the capacity to sleep, eat, cry, and express anger just like any other human. However, Jesus was far from ordinary; He was God in the flesh. He was divine like God the Father, while simultaneously having the body of a human. The Bible reveals He was equal with God the Father. He was worshipped by men on earth (Matt 28:9) and by the angels of heaven (Heb 1:6). He referenced Himself as I AM when The relationship between God and Jesus is presented to us as a father and son relationship. Jesus submitted to the Father as we must submit to Christ.
